MEPhI (then the Moscow Mechanics Institute of Ammunitions) was established November 23, 1942 for the purpose of provision of human resources for the nuclear project. From the end of the sixties MEPhI became the leading higher education institution of Russia for education and training and retraining of professional skills in the field of peaceful use of nuclear energy. The most famous scientists, Academicians I.V. Kurchatov, A.I. Leypunsky, L.A. Artsimovich, I.K. Kikoin, N.N. Semenov, Ya.B. Zeldovich, I.E. Tamm, N.I. Novikov and others were among the originators of the system of nuclear education in Russian traditions of which are held up by the MEPhI. Six Nobel Prize winners including N.G. Basov (MEPhI graduate), A.D. Sakharov, N.N. Semenov, I.E. Tamm, P.A. Cherenkov and I.M. Frank worked at the MEPhI. The list of MEPhI graduates includes prominent masters of science and technology of the Russian Federation, leading scientists and managers of Russian and international organizations guiding the development of modern scientific research in highpriority directions of science and engineering, winners of Russian and international prizes awarded for achievements in science and engineering.
